Quality-New-York

Since its inception, Quality New York has recognized the important role professional development has in the ability of programs to offer high-quality early care and education. Therefore, QNY offers professional development for all teaching staff and program administrators as an integral component in our accreditation facilitation services. We encourage the development of career paths, so that teachers can take steps from credentials to advanced degrees in early education and child development. We also challenge early childhood professionals to invest in themselves and their communities by joining professional organizations, keeping up-to-date on current issues, and networking with others in the field. Follow the links below for professional development resources.

NAEYC Standard 6: Teachers
Program Standard:
The program employs and supports a teaching staff that has the educational qualifications, knowledge, and professional commitment necessary to promote children’s learning and development and to support families’ diverse needs and interests.

  Rationale:

Children benefit most when their teachers have high levels of formal education and specialized early childhood professional preparation. Teachers who have specific preparation, knowledge, and skills in child development and early childhood education are more likely to engage in warm, positive interactions with children, offer richer language experiences, and create more high-quality learning environments.

Opportunities for teaching staff to receive supportive supervision and to participate in ongoing professional development ensure that their knowledge and skills reflect the profession’s ever-changing knowledge base.

Established by Congress, Head Start and Early Head Start are federally funded, community based child development programs designed to meet the needs of low-income children and their families. Based on strong evidence from research and practice, Head Start's positive track record demonstrates that young children involved in quality early childhood programs are substantially more successful in both school and life environments. Head Start is the only national program of its kind that utilizes a comprehensive service approach to early childhood education. In order to fulfill their objectives, the Head Start Information and Publication Center publishes resources for in-service training on many topics related to child development and learning, family partnerships, and program administration. Many of these are available on-line.
NYC Department of Education, Office of Early Childhood Development(OECD) promotes standards-based instruction in pre-kindergarten through grade three classes in public schools as well as community-based organizations. Also, OECD manages the staffing structure for early childhood services, and provides professional development and community outreach programs.
